Staying Toasty While Wearing Skirts

Here in New England it can get really chilly during the winter. I love wearing skirts, but for a long time I would only wear them on Sunday to church because I would get SO COLD with the wintery air breezing around my legs... especially since the tights I wore were really only colored nylons and didn't do much to keep the warmth in.
Over time we did come up with a few ideas on how to keep warm in the winter.

1. DON'T WEAR SUMMER WEIGHT SKIRTS!!! Make sure that the skirts you are planning on wearing are a nice thick material. (Corduroys are great, so are some cottons.)

2. Taper leg stretch pants go great under skirts, don't add much bulk, and look fine. I like wearing black ones because my shoes are black and most of my winter skirts are dark. You may prefer to wear them around the house but put on something prettier (like tights) when you go out.

3. Tights (Not Nylons) are a great way to stay warm. Vermont Country Store sells some really comfortable and very warm cotton tights.

4. If you are going to be wearing a mid-calf length skirt, but it's really cold out, stretch capris (made out of stretch pant material) over tights can go a long way to keeping you toasty.

5. Warm shoes are important too. Sneakers look fine with jean skirts, K-mart has some shoes that look great with skirts, but aren't very warm... Sometimes I like to wear my winter boots to where I'm going, and then put on my other shoes when I get there. That way I don't get snow in my shoes, but I can still wear my favorite flats.

6. Leggings also work really good under skirts.

If you do get capris or stretch pants to wear under your skirts, make sure that they have elastic waistbands, because if they have a button and zipper, or pockets, they can end up making you look a little more heavy.

Long (ankle length skirts) are usually warmer than pants because they keep all that nice warm air next to your body.

So just a short post today, but I hope that it was helpful. :-)

A few people left comments with some really helpful hints!

Kate Marie left me a comment with this helpful hint: "if you are long waisted, like I am, your shirts sometimes like to fly up in the back. This problem can be fixed by buying a couple long white tanks to wear underneath! That way if you bend over there is no problem."

Thanks Kate! :-)

Great idea!

Thanks for sharing the hints, girls!

Well, that's my measly 2 cents worth! :)
Thanks for doing this, Joy. It really is a fine idea!

Keep it up!

Hey Faith Ann!
Thanks so much for your comment. Since you didn't leave a blog address, I have to reply to your comment on here. :-)
Thanks for the suggestion, but to be honest, I really don't want to get into the pants vs. skirts debate. (You can find that debate on just about every Femininity vs. Feminism site out there if you are interested in reading it. Ladiesagainstfeminism has some great stuff on it.)
I wear both pants and skirts, but this post was just supposed to be practical tips for keeping warm while wearing skirts for those of us who enjoy wearing them in the winter. :-)
Thanks again for your comment! I love getting comments! :-)
Have a great day!

I know that this is a bit late to comment after this post but I have been searching for so long to find a way to keep warm!! I am very cold natured person and I feel like I am never able to stay warm enough while wearing skirts in winter. Yes you can wear pants, but I prefer to feel and look like the lady I am. I have also found that this new trend of leggings are a wonderful addition. I just bought several pairs and am nice and toasty!

I guess some of the advice you give is only relevant to those who believe it's acceptable to wear pants. If you believe otherwise, it's surely wrong to wear leggings, capris or pants under your skirts (possibly also tights).

Hello Sarah!
Thanks for your comment!
As far as I have understood, those who believe that it is wrong to wear pants basically want women to look like women and men to look like men. The pants, capris, or tights in this instance are undergarments. I am sure that even girls who wear jeans on a regular basis would never dream of going out in public wearing just their panties and bra, so even if you believe that a skirt is the only acceptable wardrobe for a lady it is still alright to wear undergarments. (Besides, you don't want to freeze! Wearing skirts doesn't do you much good if you are going to end up with hypothermia.)
I hope that this answered your questions! Do you believe that it is only alright to wear skirts? Or are you ok with pants as well?
Have a great day!

Dear Joy,

You have some excellent practical tips (and have made some thoughtful, considerate responses to comments that you have received).

Below is a 'comment' that I just posted on 'FeelinFeminine' and thought it might be useful for you/your readers as well....

Now that we live in snowy Denver, CO (moved from the Mojave Desert!), warm legs are a ‘must’.

The ‘links’ listed are for baby/toddler sizes but with some creativity, probably could be made into adult size Leggings or Leg Warmers.

The last ‘link’ listed is for *one page* from a company (I wouldn’t ‘thumb through’ their other pages if you are young, as they do not model modesty!). However, this page offers a photo of what can be done, perhaps, with up-sizing (literally) the ideas in the previous links. (hope that makes sense).

Joy,

May I have permission to quote you on the FeelinFeminin site ('Resources' post), as follows?

(Sorry this is so confusing, but I wanted to make sure I had your permission BEFORE I posted the comment. What you read below is only a rough draft).

Thank you!

Dear Emma,

Let me begin with saying that I LOVE your name!!! So much so that we named our firstborn 'Emma'.

As I think your comment deserves a considerate, reasonable and legitimate response, I offer (with permission) a quote from Joy:

It has seemed to me that Joy has spoken to the issue with logical candour and practical outworking of faith. I pray that quoting her has been helpful.

Yes, you have my permission to quote my blog, just make sure that you include the link to the post you are quoting.
Thank you so much for asking me! :-)

I'm sorry that I didn't reply to you sooner, we have had a lot going on as one of my relatives died over the Christmas holiday and I did not get a chance to reply to your comment until now.

Have a wonderful day, and God bless you!
